Chennai: The Sessions Court in Chennai today dismissed the bail application filed by the former advocate of P. Ramkumar, the sole suspect in the murder of software engineer S. Swathi. Principal Sessions Judge G. Jayachandran turned down the application on the grounds of ‘no representation of the accused.

Swathi, an Infosys employee, was murdered at the Nungambakkam railway station, early in the morning on June 24, while she was waiting for a train. Ramkumar was arrested by the police in his remote village a week later, based on a CCTV footage, and after door-to-door search conducted by the police.

The drama that ensued during the arrest saw Ramkumar slash his neck in an attempt to commit suicide. He was rushed to the hospital and treated. Meanwhile, the advocate who initially represented Ramkumar and filed the bail plea at the Sessions Court claimed that the entire suicide attempt was fabricated and that the police had slashed his client’s neck.

The city public prosecutor M.L. Jagan said that the bail plea was filed by the advocate as a mere publicity stunt, without informing or getting the consent of Ramkumar’s family. The very next day, the advocate announced to the media that he was not handling the case anymore.

When the bail plea finally came up for hearing at the sessions court on Friday, there was no advocate to represent Ramkumar, and the Principal Sessions Judge Jayachandran dismissed the case.

Ramkumar continues to remain in three-day initial police custody, which comes to an end in the evening today.
