The Vijayakanth-led DMDK has decided to go it alone in the coming local body elections. The party treasurer, A.R. Elangovan, today said this while announcing the party’s decision to come out of the People’s Welfare Front.

The Front, comprising DMDK, MDMK, CPI, CPI(M), TMC and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, suffered a big blow in the recent Assembly elections. It could not even win a single seat.

Disagreements arose immediately after the results were announced raising doubts about the continuity of the front.

Several DMDK members openly criticised their party chief’s electoral strategy and blamed him for their financial loss during the campaign. At one point Vijayakanth even agreed to pay a portion of the money they had lost.
