City-based The Arc Foundation along with Coimbatore Chapter of Young Indians today organised a drawing and painting competition for school children to commemorate the first death anniversary of former President A.P. J. Abdul Kalam.
About 3000 students from 100 Government and Corporation schools participated in the competition titled ‘My Kalam My Tribute My Creation’.
Three winners were selected from each school and given away the prizes. All the students were given certificates.
Another event to pay tribute to the former president would be held at a mall tomorrow during which time winners of the district-level competition would be presented with prizes.
Speaking to The Covai Post, founder and joint managing trustee of Arc Foundation said the foundation has plans to open libraries in several schools that are supported by the Government. “It was Dr. Kalam’s dream to pass on knowledge to all. Under Kalam Library Scheme we plan to open 100 libraries in Coimbatore,” she added.
Under the scheme, the foundation has already opened five libraries in Coimbatore that are fully functional. We were informed that before October 15, 100 libraries would be opened and they would be fully functional.
Each library would have a story telling corner too where volunteers would teach children moral stories. Currently volunteers are undergoing training for this, sources said.
