Driver sentenced for 10 years for forcibly marrying minor

The Fast Track Mahila Court here sentenced a driver to 10 year imprisonment for forcibly marrying and sexually assaulting a minor girl in 2014.

According to prosecution, Palanivel, 35, driver by profession and resident of Thillaivilakam in Thiruthuraipoondi Taluk in Tiruvarur district got acquainted with a 16-year-old girl, resident of Vaattathikottai area in Peravurani taluk.

On January 24 in 2014, Palanivel kidnapped her to Mannargudi where he forcibly married and sexually assaulted the girl.

Based on a complaint by the victim’s father, Vaattathikottai police registered a case and rescued the girl. Police also arrested Palanivel.

The trial of the case was conducted at the Fast Track Mahila Court in Thanjavur. The Judge found Palanivel guilty of the charges. The judge, pronouncing his verdict in the case on Friday, ordered Palanivel to undergo 10 year imprisonment, besides slapping a fine of Rs 2,500.
