A Deputy Superintendent of Police, attached to the Central Bureau of Investigation in Tamil Nadu, was convicted and sentenced to two years RI in a cheating case. He was also slapped a fine of Rs. 20,000 by the Additional Special Judge, Kannammal.
The anti-corruption unit of the CBI had initiated a case against K.A.A. Salaam and three others for allegedly trying to bring in imported goods without paying any duty to the customs department.
Salaam abused his position in the CBI, by not declaring the goods, which come under duty in the customs disembarkation and declaration cards. He evaded customs duty of Rs. 2 lakhs.
Salaam and his associates Vinod Kumar and Natha Venkata Vathsa Varadan were convicted in the case while another person was found not guilty.
