The most important demands of the 10,000 residents of Idayarpalayam Ward 7 are a proper drainage system and the renovation of public toilets.

Area leader S. Aarukutti said, “Ditches should be constructed in Rajiv Gandhi Street. Since the area is located at a junction, a proper drainage system is very essential here. Even shoppers feel the stench.”

Residents of Rahim Nagar complain that people from other localities come at night and dump their garbage there. “The garbage fills the land. Dogs dig the garbage and drag them in front of our houses. The corporation should allocate separate bins for each street. This will solve the problem greatly,” they said.

Tailor S. Balasubramaniyam from Puthiya Nesavaalar Colony said, “The sewage system is terrible here. Municipality staff never comes to clean. It’s been three months since they cleaned the ditches. Also, for the past ten days the street lights are not functioning. Women are scared to walk on the streets.”

“The waste water stagnates in the ditches and the mosquitoes occupy the area. This causes viral fever and dengue. We have complained but none of the officials takes steps to solve the issue,” P. Sivaraman, a businessman from Palli Sellum Street said.

Daily wage earner C. Bhoopathi said, “Public toilets in Indira Nagar should be renovates. The septic tank fills within a day and the waste waters overflows on to the roads. We have complained to the councillor and they haven’t taken any steps.”

According to K. Chinnasamy, the Councillor of Idayarpalayam Ward 7, the Government had sanctioned Rs.6 Crores. He had constructed roads in Anna Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Subash Chandra Bose Street, Thiyagaraj Nagar, and Yamuna Nagar. Also estimation works are on for the drainages in Rajiv Gandhi Street, Golden Nagar, Thiruvallur Nagar, and Anna Street, and for the renovation of public toilets. The government has also sanctioned for LED lights in all the areas. The councillor has promised to visit the ward and solve the problems.
