The Indian Coast Guard arrested nine Sri Lankan fishermen for fishing in Indian waters. The Sri Lankan Navy meanwhile beat up four Indian fishermen off Katchatheevu.
According to Subburaj, the Joint Director of Fisheries, the Sri Lankan fishermen were arrested by the Coast Guard while fishing off Kodiyakarai. They had also seized their two boats. The fishermen were then taken to Karaikal to be produced before a court.
The four Tamil Nadu fishermen, who were allegedly beaten up by the Sri Lankan navy near Katchatheevu, were part of a 2000-member team that had gone fishing in more than 500 boats. According to S. Sagayam, the president of Rameswaram Fishermen Association, the Sri Lankan navy personnel came in fast boats, attacked the fishermen with plastic pipes, slashed their nets, and took away their GPS devices and cellphones.
