The National Commission for Scheduled Castes yesterday carried out an inquiry with families allegedly affected in caste based violence in Periya Thadagam on the city outskirts, a fortnight ago.

Some 30 Dalits were attacked, allegedly by 17 caste Hindus, for refusing to play the Jamab, a musical instrument, during the Vinayaka Chathurthi Festival on September 7. Six were hospitalised.

Though a case was registered, no arrests were made. So, the families petitioned the district collector and expressed willingness to move out of the area.

Taking cognizance of the case, research officer of the commission, Chandraprabha and investigating officer S Lister met the families, as part of the inquiry today.

The report and detailed recommendations will be submitted to the district collector.
