IS THE WORLD LISTENING? `My name is Khan, and I am not a terrorist’

Bengaluru: We are living in strange and uncertain times. Every second day, there is a diktat by the world superpower that unsettles many. The recent executive order by Donald Trump to temporarily bar entry into the US to refugees and citizens from seven Muslim-majority nations has saddened many.

The plight of the Muslims in the US is not getting any better. And out of all, Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has expressed it openly through a tweet. “”My Name Is Khan” on Sunday clocked seven years since its release, feels sad that the film’s plot about the plight of Muslims in the US after 9/11 is still relevant in present times.”

The actor had been grilled and detained many times in the past because of his questionable surname.

“I can understand the pain that any well-meaning Muslim is going through. The sort of cornering, labelling and suspicion that surrounds our religion is very sad. The stereotype makes it difficult for us,” says Tanveer Ahmed, an IT professional.

In the same vein, Nusrat Fatima says, “I live in the US and the fear of us being called a terrorist always haunts me. The situation in India and in the world over is the same. We have been painted with the same brush. No wonder, even the most normal professional is seething with anger against the State for cornering them.”

Expressing disbelief, Ruksana Khatun, HR says, “Each day, President Trump is coming up with something unusual to spread more hatred. The order that he has passed suspends the entry of all refugees for 120 days and the issuing of visas for 90 days for citizens from seven countries — Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Iran. The plight of Muslims in the US is only getting worse. The world’s most powerful nation has given up on humanitarian considerations. The most operative word now is religion. Funnily, we always have to prove our innocence and nationalism.”
