IT raids on Jagathrakshakan’s properties uncovers tax evasion of over Rs.200 Cr

Unaccounted cash of Rs.20 crores have been recovered so far from the houses and offices of the former Union Minister S. Jagathrakshakan, as officials of the Income-Tax department continue their raid for the second consecutive day. Also unveiled were evidences of tax evasion of more than Rs.200 crores.

The raids, conducted simultaneously at 40 places, including a hotel, office, a distillery, and houses in Nungambakkam, Adyar, and Mamallapuram, were ordered after the department was informed that the former union minister was indulging in tax evasion. Of the Rs.20 crores that was recovered, Rs.5 crores were seized from Jagathrakshakan’s house. The colleges run by his family members, including Bharath University and Sree Balaji Medical College, in Chennai, and Sri Lakshmi Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences in Puducherry, were also raided. All communication links were disconnected at these places and police protection was given to prevent mishaps.

Also under investigation is Elite Distilleries Pvt. Ltd. Jagathrakshakan’s family members are part of the company’s board of directors. The family members were questioned about black money and gold possessions.

Jagathrakshakan was the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Minister of State New and Renewable Energy, and Minister of State Commerce and Industry, from 2009 to 2013. He was also accused of being involved in the coal scam.
