What looked like a lost cause yesterday took a turn for the better when S. Kousalya, widow of the slain Dalit youth V. Shankar, told the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) that she wants to continue her education and move ahead in life.

Representatives from the NCSC, on Wednesday, visited Kousalya, who is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. They are here to make a report about the condition of the woman.

During the hour-long meeting with the representatives, Kousalya showed signs of speedy recovery and had shared her interest in continuing her education and finding a good job to go on with her life.

“She is recovering well and wants to be with Shankar’s family who have also shown interest in accepting her back,” said C. Chandraprabha, Research Officer and Head of Office of NCSC, Tamil Nadu.

The State team, comprising Chandraprabha and Investigator S. Lister previously visited the spot in which the crime took place in Udumalpet and also visited the family members of Shankar at their house in Kumaralingam.

“The family members are ready to accept her and have asked for a house in the Green Houses allotted by the Government. They have also demanded security for their family,” she added.

She further stated that the team also checked with the Udumalpet and Kumaralingam Police and collected details of the Section under which the accused are booked under the SC/ST Act.

“We would make sure that justice is done in this case and the accused are punished under the law,’ she added.

Ms. Chandraprabha also added that the report of their visit would be sent to the head office of NCSC in Delhi within two days, which will decide on further action to be taken in the case.

Claiming that the security provided to Kousalya is adequate, Chandraprabha said that Kousalya would soon recover from the injuries.
