Memories etched in gold pendants

Taking a selfie and posting it on social media has become passé. Also gone are the days when people would take family photographs and frame their most memorable moments. Instead the trend these days is to create golden memories to last forever. Wondering how this is possible? Gaj Gallery, a Coimbatore-based online jewellery store, is now giving people an opportunity to convert their most memorable photograph into a gold pendant.

We are told that a selfie can be converted into a mini sculpture pendant of either 18- or 22-carat gold. The online store also creates scale models of buildings and functional toy cars in gold. All this is done using 3D modelling tools and manufacturing techniques, which are trade secrets of this store.

In order to create awareness about their work, Gaj Gallery recently hosted an expo. On display were over a thousand handcrafted gold and diamond earrings, pendants, rings, and bracelets inspired by Turkish designs. Even classic ornament like rings, bangles, pendants, and earrings were displayed and sold at the expo.

However, of all creations, the big attraction at the venue was the pendant of superstar Rajni. “Rajni is part of the Tamil culture and has done a lot in popularising Tamil worldwide. Since the expo was slated to happen around the movie release date, we thought we could do a fan tribute by crafting a Rajni pendant in gold. The pendants are available for sale. As an Aadi offer, every customer at the expo has a chance to win a Kabali gold pendant,” Arun Ranganathan, Managing Director of Gaj Gallery, said.

Talking to us after the expo, Arun said, “A woman came to us with a photograph of her daughter on a swing. She wanted to see if we could make a jewel out of it. We made a mini sculpture out of it which could be used as a pendant in about 4-5 grams of gold. For her it was a precious memorabilia.”
