Swift action was taken by an education institution and the traffic police in solving the problem of over speeding college buses, thanks to Namma Kovai WhatsApp group.

The group, that has around 200 members, discusses issues concerning society and seeks action from officials.

Last night around 8.30, a member complained about the over speeding buses of Sri Krishna group of Educational Institutions. The buses, transporting students and staff, were reportedly seen over speeding on the Kuniamuthur-Kovaipudur stretch.

Prof. A. Alargarsamy, Head of the Department of Social Work, Sri Krishna Arts and Science College, immediately brought it to the notice of the management, that called for an emergency meeting today.

A meeting with various department heads including the transport department and bus drivers was held. Nearly 200 members attended the meeting.

“We instructed the transport staff not to violate transport rules and regulations. Every bus of our institution will have a separate staff member, who will be in charge of ensuring normal speed,” Alagarsamy said after the meeting.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dr. R. Sivakumar, who was monitoring the traffic movement on the Kuniamuthur-Kovaipudur stretch, told Covai Post that the Coimbatore police had procured two hand devices that would record the speed of vehicles.

“One is being used in West zone and another in the East zone since last evening. It will help us track the over speeding vehicles with all details such as vehicle number, time and speed. A challan generated by the device would be handed over to the driver on the spot. Drivers cannot deny over speeding,” he said.

Ever since the group informed about the over speeding vehicles on the stretch, police personnel are maintaining extra vigil. “Today alone, between 4 pm and 6 pm 22 four-wheelers and 19 two-wheelers were caught. They were fined Rs. 500 each,” Sivakumar added.
