Political stunts pile up on the penultimate day of polls

With less than 12 hours for the poll booths in Tamil Nadu to open their doors for the voters, political parties that were denied the opportunity to campaign by the Election Commission have certainly found a way to make news in dramatic fashion all over the state.

Though political parties constantly kept complaining about money distribution in many constituencies, the credit for starting it all goes to the PMK candidate of the Ulundurpet constituency, who stormed into the office of the Returning Officer along with party cadre alleging money distribution by AIADMK and DMK.

But it was not just papers and petitions that were handed over. He made waves by showering the money, allegedly distributed by the Dravidian majors, on the Returning Officer.

He further allegedly abused the R.O. in the room and also flung away a few documents that were on the table. Still not pacified, the party staged a demonstration in front of the office.

A very angry Election Commission filed an FIR on Balu and other party cadre for their unruly behaviour inside the government office.

Coimbatore became the centre of attention on Sunday with fists of fury flying between two political parties.

It was the turn of the AIADMK and the BJP to come to blows, leaving properties damaged and people petrified on the busy Rangai Gowder Street at Town Hall.

While the AIADMK claimed that Vanathi Srinivasan, the BJP candidate of Coimbatore South Constituency was campaigning at the local Jain temple, the BJP accused the AIADMK of distributing money to lure voters.

Though no proper evidence of the attack was available, Vanathi clarified at a press conference that she had gone there to attend a memorial service of a well-wisher who had passed away, and added that she was attacked by the AIADMK hooligans. While she was speaking to the media, her associates sent complaints to the District Electoral Officer.

The AIADMK refused to believe her statements and stood firmly by their claims that she was campaigning unlawfully, after the campaign deadline expired. They backed their statements with a campaign notice allegedly issued by Vanathi inside the temple. Earlier too, Vanathi was booked for various campaign rule violations, by the EC.

More such events are expected in the next few hours. Hopefully, the Election Commission is prepared enough to avoid mishaps.
