Six candidates – four from the AIADMK and two from the DMK – are set to go to the Rajya Sabha unopposed from Tamil Nadu.
According to Legislative Assembly Secretary and Returning Officer A.M.P. Jamaludeen, the nomination papers of seven other independent candidates were rejected.
The candidates – sitting member A. Navaneethakrishnan, former union minister S.R. Balasubramanian, R. Vaithilingam and A. Vijayakumar of AIADMK, T.K.S. Elangovan and R.S. Bharathi of DMK – would be declared elected unopposed on June 3, the last date for withdrawal of nomination.
The retiring members are A. Navaneethakrishnan, A.W. Rabi Bernard and P.H. Paul Manoj Pandian of the AIADMK, K.P. Ramalingam and S. Thangavelu of the DMK and Sudarsana Natchiappan of the Congress.
This is the first time that a Congress member could not enter the Upper House from the State.
