This post office was a stable for the English a century ago

The building housing the Podanur Post Office is more than 134 years old.
Constructed on October 4, 1882 by the British, it was initially used by the Government (read British) employees for taking rest and as a stable for their horses. Later it started functioning as a mail office for exchanging communication (letters) between officials in Udhagamandalam and in Madras Presidency and Kerala.
The Podanur PO, the first and the oldest post office of Coimbatore, was handling letters even to areas such as Sulakkal in Pollachi, Udumalpet and Palladam of Tirupur, Chettipalayam and Vadachithur in the district. It was known for efficiently disbursing pension to more than 700 senior citizens.
Currently the fully computerised post office has more than 15 employees. L Suresh Prabhu, the Post Master told Covai Post, that the PO has eight postmen who deliver letters and mails till Aathupaalam, Sundharapuram, Chettipalayam and Vellore areas.
“Podanur Post Office was the first PO to implement the Project Arrow for the benefit of the public in the year 2009. The same year the post office was computerised,” he said.
