City-based Ramakrishna Mission has trained around 25 transgenders to become car drivers. Funded by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and National Institute of Social Defence, the candidates were trained to drive cars and obtain a driving license.
Five out of 25 trainees have got their licence so far, in which they have been registered as transgenders.
According to C. Elanchezhiyan, coordinator of the programme, “We have trained transgenders to drive four wheelers.
We also help them in getting a driving licence. In all their previous identity proofs they were mentioned as male. Now it will be mentioned as transgender.”
“They will be employed as van and cab drivers in schools, so that children respect them. The next generation should accept them wholeheartedly,” he added.
G. Yamini, 24-year-old transgender who went under this training said, “I have got my ID proof now in which I have been mentioned as a transgender. With that I have registered my name in employment exchange. I am planning to buy a car and run as taxi.”
