Ukkadam big tank polluted due to official apathy?

The Ukkadam big tank, one of the largest water bodies in the city, is getting increasingly polluted due to unbridled sewage loads being diverted into it. While one big sewer on the Selvapuram Road side of the tank is emptying sewage into the big tank, another is being laid, which would further increase the pollution levels in the vital body.

The Ukkadam big tank is popular as a walkers’ paradise and its large spread attracts a large number of avian visitors during the winter season.

“The bad stench emanating from the tank due to sewers emptying into the tank is so off-putting,” said a walker. “It is also learnt that CCMC officials have given a contract to lay a new sewer connection into the tank, which would further increase its pollution levels and lead to deterioration of the tank,” he said.

The cadres of Hindu Makkal Katchi have already petitioned the collector for discontinuation of the practice but in vain.

“So far the corporation officials have turned a blind eye to the problem by saying that in future treatment plants would be installed to check pollution in the tank,” said a Hindu Makkal Katchi activist.

Speaking to Covai Post, CCMC Commissioner K Vijayakarthikeyan said that only pipes were laid for the disposal of rainwater collected from the drains constructed on the southern edge of the Perur Bypass Road. The pipes were only drains and laid for that purpose only, he said.

However, the Commissioner added that he would depute a team of officials to do an inspection and take necessary action if any pollution is reported.
