Chennai: A 11-storied building—part of a twin tower—was demolished on Wednesday evening using detonators and implosion technique after elaborate safety arrangements by the police.
The structure was part of a twin residential apartment tower under construction, of which one came down in June 2014 killing 61 people. In May 2016, the Supreme Court ordered the demolition of this building, as it was unsafe.
The residential project, Trust Heights, was being developed by Prime Sristi Housing Pvt Ltd. The project comprised two 11-storey blocks, named The Belief and The Faith. One of the towers collapsed on June 28, killing 61 and injuring 27.
Today, people residing within the 100m radius of the building that was to be demolished were asked to move out to a marriage hall, where arrangements were made to accommodate them during the time.
The city police blocked the roads leading to that area and holiday was declared for some schools.
Several people watched the demolition—a first of its kind—in the state.
