If you make time your friend and walk with time, there is no fight. The moment you fight with time, then you are in trouble. I made time my friend, and that’s why the changing audience has been something that I could handle,” says the singing sensation, Usha Uthup. This sort of explains why is is still a favourite for more than five decades. An artist who is still relevant in 2018, an artist who still gets the audience on her feet with her powerful rendition surely made time her friend, because in an industry that is fickle with talent, it is hard to be wanted.

Phoenix Marketcity, Bengaluru’s favourite destination for shopping and entertainment organized Rewind 2018, an event that brought back the essence of evergreen music with Usha Uthup performing live. The evergreen heartthrob of the nation brought alive the golden era of music with her inimitable rendition of some of the chart toppers of all time. Among her countless hits, she brought the crowd to their feet on songs like Skyfall, Dum Maaro Dum, Ramba Ho, Darling , Kolaveri, Bulleya, Kali Teri, Laungegavacha, Senorita and many others.

“It is fantastic to be back in Bangalore. 1969-70 was a magical year for me, where everything wonderful happened. My first appearance in Bangalore happened in Hotel Bangalore International, and ever since then there was no looking back. It is my second time in Phoenix. The audience here knows their music. Whenever i have come here, the kannadigas and the cosmopolitan audience has only showered love. For me, Bangalore is a small town big city,” says the singer.

Perhaps , one of the secrets to a versatile singer is to embrace music from all languages and Didi is a perfect example of that. She has sung in 17 Indian languages and eight foreign language. “My journey has been wonderful. I have been a pioneer in night club singing. I started off in a night club in 1968-1969. I was the first indian international recording artist,” she says with her unmatchable tone.

Usha Uthup, a Padma Shri awardee, has done playback, Indipop, Jazz and classical genre. Her deep voice gave her the distinct edge over many other singers. She has lent her voice to a slew of blockbusters and has worked with legends such as Ilayaraaja, A.R. Rahman, R. D. Burman and Shankar Ehsaan Loy. Though she has seen her highs and lows, but she chooses to talk about her highs only. “I am a compulsive optimist. I only talk about the good times and not the bad ones. I would always advise youngsters to not lose hope and than in there. There is no substitute for hardwork,” she signs off.
