Apart from the performances on the field, the performances of Indian players off the field is also a parameter to judge whether they are good enough to be part of the national side or not. All the players are required to clear the yo-yo test in order to get selected in the national team. A failure in clearing this test saw Washington Sundar failing to make it to the national team for the home series against Australia while the likes of Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina failed to make their comebacks last year. Raina was drafted in the T20I squad as soon as he cleared the test earlier this year.

In the month of June, The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) dropped Ambati Rayudu and Mohammed Shami from the national team due to a failure in clearing the yo-yo test while Sanju Samson made way for Ishan Kishan in India A team due to the same reason.

Ravi Shastri, head coach of Indian cricket team, had said that the test is here to stay and those failing it would not be selected in the national team. The policy of team India received a mixed response as few batted for the test to make compulsory while were against it.
Former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev has also talked about the test and as per the World Cup winning captain, the test should not be made compulsory.

“I think it’s important to keep a fitness level but in my mind, cricketing fitness is more important than anything else and cricketing fitness is different from Yo-Yo Tests,” Kapil Dev was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

“If I say (Ravichandran) Ashwin is not a 100 per cent athlete but he is a 100 per cent performer of the game, he has achieved more than anybody in the history of the game, can you really say he is not good enough for selection if he doesn’t pass the Yo-Yo Test? Same with (Saurav) Ganguly, he wasn’t one of the best athletes but he was one of the best captains we have had,” he added.

As far as the test is concerned, the national players are not expected to undergo yo-yo test soon. It might be conducted ahead of the team selection for World Cup 2019 that is slated to start in the month of May. BCCI could not conduct the test on players before the team selection due to IPL but next year, tests will be conducted before the selectors name the squad.
