Apple on Tuesday evening launched a new iPad aimed at school students. The new iPad, which comes with a new 9.7-inch screen, has been paired with a Pencil, Apple’s smart stylus, which until was only available on Pro versions of iPad. The new iPad has a price tag of $329 for consumers and $299 for schools. The Pencil will cost additional $99. For schools the cost of Pencil will be $10 less at $89.

Update: In India, the new 9.7-inch iPad with Wi-Fi connectivity will be available at a price tag of Rs 28,000. This model will come with 32GB internal storage. While the 9.7-inch iPad with both Wi-Fi and Cellular connectivity will be available for Rs 38,600. In addition, the Apple Pencil will sell for Rs 7,600 in the country. In India, the new iPad will be available in three colours — Silver, Space Grey and Gold. Buyers will be able to purchase the newly launched iPad in India starting April.

While the iPad 9.7-inch is going on sale in the US and 24 other countries this week, in India it will come in April. Chances are that in India, the device will be offered through regular channels with regular price, instead of having any special sale for schools.

The new iPad uses an A10 processor, has a retina display and comes with a host of features – like dissecting frog in virtual reality – that could be useful to school students.

“iPad is our vision for the future of computing and hundreds of millions of people around the world use it every day at work, in school and for play. This new 9.7-inch iPad takes everything people love about our most popular iPad and makes it even better for inspiring creativity and learning,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of product marketing. “Our most popular and affordable iPad now includes support for Apple Pencil, bringing the advanced capabilities of one of our most creative tools to even more users. This iPad also has the power of the A10 Fusion chip, combined with the big, beautiful Retina display, advanced cameras and sensors that enable incredible AR experiences simply not possible on other devices.”

To make the new iPad more attractive to students, Apple has apparently worked on the software that power the functionality of Pencil. In its statement, the company said, “Apple Pencil delivers a remarkably fluid and natural drawing experience. Advanced sensors measure both pressure and tilt, and provide pixel-perfect accuracy and low latency for activities from note taking to illustration in apps like Notability, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and Microsoft Office.”

The new iPad with Pencil aims at Google Chromebooks that have become popular in schools and colleges in the US. While Apple started early in the education sector trying to woo schools by offering them special deals on bulk iPad purchases, of late it is Google Chromebook that is winning because of its more traditional laptop-like design and features such as seamless document collaboration using Google docs and cloud storage.

In addition to the new hardware, Apple also launched a new app called Schoolworks, through which teachers will be able to provide handouts (class lessons in PDF etc) and specify activities for students. This app will be rolled out in June. For teachers, Apple has built another app called Apple Teacher, which will help teachers improve professionally.
