Twitter updates privacy policy after Facebook, Cambridge Analytica data scandal

Tech companies have been under intense scrutiny on how they protect user data after the entire Facebook, Cambridge Analytica data leak scandal last month. As a result of which Twitter has now updated its privacy policy with the aim to give users more transparency over their data. The revised “Terms and Privacy Policy” will be effective starting today, May 25, and will apply globally. The new Twitter policies come in right ahead of new regulatory guidelines on European data privacy laws.

The idea behind revising the privacy policies is to have users more control over their data. Twitter basically wants users to know the data that it collects and how it uses them. “We believe you should always know what data we collect from you and how we use it, and that you should have meaningful control over both,” Damien Kieran, Global Data Protection Officer at Twitter, writes in a blog post.

Twitter with its revised privacy policy is now letting users have more controls on the data they share with the social media platform. This means users will now be able to manually choose the information that they want to share with Twitter and the ones that they don’t want the social media platform to know. Commenting on the updated policy, Kieran notes, “We want to empower you to make the best decisions about the information that you share with us.” Overall, the changes in the privacy policy are meant to make the privacy policy visually clear and easy to use, Kieran further writes.

To have control on the data users share with Twitter, they can simply update their account settings and limit the data the social media platform collects. Explaining the same, Twitter notes, “We give you control through your settings to limit the data we collect from you and how we use it.” Twitter will now let users have control over things like — account security, marketing preferences, apps that can access their account, and address book contacts they’ve uploaded to Twitter.

Twitter explains that the platform does collect user information, but users can have transparency into that information and manage them. “In addition to the information you share with us, we use your Tweets, content you’ve read, Liked, or Retweeted, and other information to determine what topics you’re interested in, your age, the languages you speak, and other signals to show you more relevant content. We give you transparency into that information, and you can modify or correct it at any time,” writes Twitter.

The social media platform said that it is looking to expand and revise the privacy policy content to make some legalistic or technical language as clear as possible in the days to come. “We think it’s absolutely essential that you know exactly what we mean when we refer to location data or data from advertising partners,” says Twitter.
