Hours after an ad hoc teacher from Daulat Ram College was arrested on Tuesday for sexually harassing and stalking a first-year student, another case of sexual harassment has emerged from Delhi University where a third-year student of B.A. Hindi (Hons) approached the vice-chancellor alleging that a professor asked his students to kiss and hug him.

A third-year student of Bharati College, also a state level boxing player, wrote to DU VC Yogesh Tyagi on Tuesday alleging that Amit Kumar, an assistant professor of Political Science, would send girls lewd messages on WhatsApp and would call at inappropriate hours, adding that the professor crossed all limits of a teacher-student relationship.

In a letter to VC, a copy of which is with the Mail Today, the student has narrated her experience. He (the professor) made calls to my friends at inappropriate hours. When I could not tolerate more of such nuisance, I had no option but to confront him in April last year. I approached him but he sought sexual favours and suggested meeting outside college, preferably at my place or his, she wrote.

I confronted him in our college classroom where he accepted sending text and calls made by him at odd hours. He even said he can offer an explanation on what he meant when he said he wanted to kiss and hug my friends, she said.

Acting principal of Bharati College Dr. Mukti Sanyal confirmed receiving a video where students have confronted Kumar. However, the principal denied receiving complaints about the accused professors inappropriate conduct in the past.

I learned about the incident from the press. I have received the video where the professor can be seen confessing that he made such advances. The students have not directly approached the college faculty or administration, but we have initiated proceedings with the college administration. The internal complaints committee of our college is investigating the video, Sanyal told Mail Today.

The complainant also claimed that she is facing threats of getting suspended from the college for raising the issue.

“I had brought this matter to the administrations notice. Now I am being asked to settle the issue within the college, the student said. I was caught talking during my exams in November last year and asked to leave. I now fear action by the authorities for raising the issue of sexual harassment against the professor,” she added.

An FIR was filed against the professor on January 31 at Maurice Nagar police station, where the student mentioned that the professor had been stalking her for months.
