Congress demands floor test in TN

Chennai: A day after the DMK in Tamil Nadu demanded floor test in the house, its ally Congress on Wednesday urged Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao to direct Edappadi K Palaniswami to prove his majority in the Assembly. This was prompted after 19 AIADMK legislators supporting `ousted’ leader TTV Dhinakaran withdrew their support to Palaniswami.

“Consequent upon the identical letters given by 22 members of the legislative assembly expressing lack of confidence in the chief minister, an unprecedented constitutional crisis erupted in which the present government headed by Palaniswami has lost the majority,” Congress legislative party leader K R Ramasamy said in a letter to the governor.

Any inordinate delay in asking the chief minister to prove his majority in the instant case will pave the way for continuance of an unconstitutional government and destablise democratic norms.

“It will also give room for evil practice of horse-trading as occurred when the incumbent chief minister proved his majority on an earlier confidence motion,” he alleged.

Ramasamy letter says: “Kindly uphold the constitutional norms and the parameters laid down in the famous judgment in SR Bommai case by the Supreme Court.”
