Dropping his biggest ever hint on joining politics, megastar Kamal Haasan has said he wants to start the process of “change” in Tamil Nadu politics.

“The politics of Tamil Nadu can change and I want to bring about that change, no matter how slow it may be,” the 62-year-old actor told The Quint on Thursday.

Haasan said he is “not promising swift remedies”. “But I promise to start the process of change,” he said.
Haasan was unambiguous about having electoral ambitions. “Don’t vote me in and then wait for five years to vote me out. Sack me immediately if I don’t deliver,” he said.

The actor indicated that corruption in politics will be his major plank. “Either I go or corruption in politics goes. We can’t have both,” he said.

He, however, said no existing political party matches his ideology. “A political party is about an ideology. And I don’t think my goals in politics can match the ideology of any political party,” he said.

Reports have suggested that Haasan, who has often been critical of the two major parties of Tamil Nadu – the AIADMK and DMK – may soon float a new political party.

Still, Haasan is believed to be in touch with CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury. Earlier this week, the Left said it was planning to invite the popular star to a session at its mega congress slated for next year in Hyderabad.

The actor met Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who is also a CPM politburo member, earlier this month in what was described by the party as a courtesy call.

“I can tell you one thing, my colour is definitely not saffron. Most of the leftists are my heroes,” Haasan had said after his meeting with Vijayan.
