COIMBATORE: Seeking immediate roll back of increased bus fare, a few workers of Tamil Maanila Congress on Monday came by bullock carts to submit a memorandum to the District Collector. Arriving in four bullock carts at the collectorate, they raised slogans against the fare hike saying that common man will be badly affected, if the Government did not withdraw the hike.

TMC Youth Wing president, Yuvaraja, who led the agitation, said that the common man will have no other way but to travel by bullock carts and sought immediate roll back.

Meanwhile, around 100 students belonging to Government Arts and Science College resorted to picketing, squatting in the middle of the road, to protest against police, who have taken into custody a student leader, during an agitation against bus fare hike.

As the students, who boycotted the classes and started raising slogans a against the hike, police rushed to the spot and asked them to disperse or else to face arrest.

As the students remained failed to budge and wanted to submit a memorandum to the Collector, police took a SFI leader Dinesh into custody, for which some students squatted in the middle of the road seeking his immediate release.

Sensing trouble, police immediately released Dinesh and the students dispersed.

Later Dinesh said that the students were most affected, as they have to shell out an additional Rs.20 every day. He cautioned to intensify the agitation by gathering students similar to the one seeking the implementation of Jallikkattu.

Meanwhile, some 100 students of a private college in Kaundampalayam also came to the street and staged a demonstration, which however was withdrawn after the intervention of police and college management.
