A special Central Bureau of Investigation court in Delhi today granted former finance minister P Chidambaram interim protection from arrest in the Aircel-Maxis case after he moved an anticipatory bail application.

Chidambaram has been granted interim protection until June 5, when the court will next hear the matter.

June 5 is also the date when Chidambaram has to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the case.

Senior advocate and Congress leader Kapil Sibal argued for Chidambaram during his anticipatory bail plea hearing.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are probing the Aircel-Maxis case of alleged money laundering. The CBI had arrested P Chidambaram’s son Karti Chidambaram in connection with the case in February this year.

The case pertains to Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted in 2006 by P Chidambaram when he was the Union finance minister in the Manmohan Singh government.

The probe agencies have claimed that an alleged payment of Rs 26 lakh was made by Aircel Televentures Limited to ASCPL within days of the FIPB approval. The ASCPL is allegedly linked to Karti Chidambaram.
