A 31-year-old farmer was trampled to death by an elephant near Sirumugai, some 45 km from here, when he was returning home last night.

Kanakaraj, who was returning home around 9 p.m. to his village Kittepalayam on his motorcycle, noticed a single elephant coming from the opposite direction, police said today.

Fearing for life, he dropped his two-wheeler and attempted to run. However, the elephant chased him and trampled him to death, they said. The body was sent to the Govenrment hospital here for postmortem.
