Injured elephant dies in Mudumalai

An elephant, that suffered serious leg injury after hit by a bus on July 4, died here today without responding to the treatment.

According to forest department officials, the elephant sustained injuries when a government-owned bus hit it while it was trying to cross the road in Shoolagiri near Hosur.

The pachyderm was brought to Theppakad elephant camp in Mudumalai last night for advanced treatment. Veterinarians Manoharan and Vijayaraghavan were attending to the animal. However, it died around 12.30 p.m.

The 10-year-old elephant had also suffered spine injuries and fractures in the ribs with internal blood clots as it collapsed after being hit by the speeding bus, sources added.
