Thanjavur: The local unit secretary of AIADMK was murdered by an unidentified armed gang at Kumbakonam last night.

Dhakshinamurthy, 40, resident of Konerirajapuram in Kuthalam union, was returning home in his motorbike with his relative after visiting a temple in Kumbakonam. When he was nearing a private school at Srinagar Colony, an armed gang in motorcycles intercepted him and attacked him with weapons and escaped.

Dhakshinamurthy who sustained multiple injuries was rushed to the Government Hospital in Kumbakonam where he was declared ‘brought dead’. The Kumbakonam West police have registered a case.

Dhakshinamurthy was running a brick-kiln in his village and he was elected as member from the 9th ward to Konerirajapuram panchayat in the last local body elections. He is survived by his wife Madhavi and two daughters.

Police suspect that he could have been murdered due to previous enmity.
