Police today registered cases, including for unlawful assembly against six Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) workers, including its president Arjun Sampath, for bursting crackers near the district Collectorate.

The workers, led by Sampath, burst crackers near the Collectorate yesterday, to celebrate the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 by the Narendra Modi government.

Based on complaints by officials and police present on duty there, the Race Course police registered cases against Sampath and others under IPC Sections 143 (unlawful assembly) and 285 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter), police said.
