60 govt. polytechnic students taken ill

At least 60 students of the Government Polytechnic College here have been hospitalised, following complaints of nausea and stomach upset.

According to police, the hostel inmates complained of vomiting and stomach upset after consuming a variety rice last night. They were immediately rushed to the Government Hospital. Another 30 students were taken to the hospital this morning with similar complaints and all of them are undergoing treatment. The food and water samples have been sent to laboratory for testing.

According to the hospital dean, Edwin Joe, the reason could be ascertained only after report was received.

District Collector T.N. Hariharan visited the hospital and enquired about the health condition with the students.
