The transportation of goods from Tamil Nadu to Kerala was largely affected on Friday as members of the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) went on a one day strike.

In a release, AIMTC said that the assurance made by the chief minister of Kerala Oomen Chandy during the talks held on April 6 in 2015 was not honoured as the promises were not implemented.

One of the major demands of AIMTC has been the increase in the number of sales tax counters in the Walayar check post so as to avoid delay. They have further demanded that the private weigh-bridges at the Walayar check post to be handed over to the government. The also sought setting up of government owned weigh-bridges additionally.

They have also alleged that the Kerala Government has allotted Rs 2.5 crores for the establishment of parking area in the check post yet have claimed that the work has not been started.

AIMTC has also said that the scrapping of old vehicles and fixing a minimum educational qualification of class 10 to obtain driving license has affected the employment of the drivers and has created manpower shortage.

The association has said that the further course of actions will be decided during its meeting on March 11, if their demands are not addressed.
