Following poultry and construction and debris (C and D) wastes, now bakeries too have started dumping expired items on the lake bunds near Valankulam, here in Coimbatore.

According to sources, residents close to lake had found packets of expired biscuits and chips on the lake bunds allegedly dumped by bakeries. Some of the kids in the vicinity have also reportedly picked up the expired products for consumption.

“We only knew that the products had expired after examining the packets,” said a resident, adding that they feared that consuming expired products would lead to health issues.

Another resident added that kids were unaware of the harm and pick up the packets when no one is watching.

“Strict actions should be taken against those involved in such illegal activities, and officials must act,” he added.

According to a higher official from the City Corporation, a separate space has been allocated for dumping the C and D wastes and building rubbles, near Ukkadam.

“Directions have been sent to everyone that wastes should be dumped only in that space,” the official added.
