Brain dead young woman’s organs give fresh lease to seven patients in Coimbatore

Coimbatore : A 32-year old brain dead woman became instrumental in saving the lives of seven persons, after her organs were harvested and transplanted on them at a private hospital here.

The deceased V Gomathi of Palladam in nearby Tirupur district had fallen off a two-wheeler on May 4. She had severe head injuries and brought and admitted to Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital (KMCH) here.

She failed to respond to treatment and was declared brain dead the next day. Her husband S Vasan came forward to donate her organs, a KMCH statement said today.

Vital organs like heart, liver, kidney, eyes, bone and skin were harvested yesterday and liver and one kidney were transplanted to the patients in KMCH.

The heart was sent to private hospital at Chennai, one kidney to another private hospital and bone and skin to the third. Her eyes too were given to a city hospital, resulting in a new lease of life to seven patients, it said.
