The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa inaugurated, via video conferencing, the Angling and Sports Eco Park at the 16-acre Chetpet Lake, in Chennai today. The Rs.42 crore project was announced by her under in the State Asssembly under Rule 110 in April 2013.

The lake, maintained by the Fisheries Department, was renovated in preparation of the project.

The newly constructed Eco Park now offers various entertainment activities like fishing, adventure water sports, boating, multilevel parking space, and also a fishing canteen serving delicious fish-based dishes.

The lake was originally spread over 9 acres and had an anglers club in the 1940s. Lack of proper maintenance of the lake saw it deteriorate into a vast garbage pit for the slum dwellers who lived nearby.
