Joining the growing agitation over the suicide of a PhD scholar of the Hyderabad Central University on Tuesday, the students of the Government Law College of Coimbatore staged a sit-in protest in the college campus on Wednesday.

The suicide of Rohit Vemula, a PhD student of Life Sciences in the Hyderabad University, has backfired on the ruling party and the Ministry of Human Resource and Development as the opposition parties and social activists have launched protests in various parts of the country.

Even as the Hyderabad police have registered FIR against Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, Vice Chancellor Appa Rao, BJP legislator N. Ramachandra Rao, and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) member Kumar, who had given a written complaint against Rohit Vemula for manhandling along with 40 Ambedkar Students’ Association (ASA) members, which lead to the suspension of Vemula and four other students from the University, protests continued for the second day with students demanding the sacking of Dattatreya and Appa Rao.

Joining the protesters, more than 200 students of the Coimbatore Law College staged a sit-in protest demanding justice.

“Vemula had mention in his letter that he had not received stipend from the university which, we believe, is clearly based on political interference. We seek justice,” a protester said.

He further added that students are not given freedom to express themselves. “We condemn such activities and demand a clear investigation in the case,” he alleged.
