Even as the Coimbatore administration was busy closing down about 60 Tasmac liquor outlets in the district, social activists, including women, staged protest in the city to remove the liquor shops near places of worship and educational institutions.

Following the order of the Chief Minister to close down 500 liquor outlets across Tamil Nadu, the Coimbatore district administration was taking steps to shut down the shops in the city. Meanwhile, activists assembled near a shop in Papanaickenpalayam and demanded that the liquor shops near the temple and a school also be closed.

The activists wanted to know the basis on which the shops were selected to be closed down – for earning low revenues, or due to their proximity to the temples and educational institutions. But the officials refused to answer, and sent them away with the assurance that necessary steps will be taken to address their grievance.
