DMDK women’s wing leader and party founder Vijayakant’s wife Premalatha has been booked for allegedly making a controversial statement during a public meeting in Tirunelveli. The said refrain not only amounted to instigation but also went against the EC’ Model Code of Conduct.
According to Police, Ms. Premalatha, in a veiled reference to DMK and AIADMK, had reportedly told the gathering that “some political parties will offer Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 3,000 per vote. You ask them for Rs. 1 lakh per vote”.
Police have booked a case against her for instigating voters to accept money from DMK and AIADMK to vote in the upcoming Assembly elections.
The case had been registered under the Representation of People Act and IPC on a complaint registered by local AIADMK workers with election officials. Police also said that the case was booked on the basis of a report submitted by the officials along with the recordings of her speech at the meeting.
DMDK is contesting the May 16 elections in alliance with four-party People’s Welfare Front with Vijayakant as the Chief Ministerial candidate.
