Thirty elephants have turned up for the annual rejuvenation camp at Thekkampati this year, against the expected 43.

Initiated by AIADMK government, the first camp was held in 2003 for 30 days, with the participation of 55 elephants. In 2004, 65 elephants attended the 48-day-long camp. In 2005, 63 elephants participated in the 48 days camp. But, when DMK took over, the camp was discontinued.

After the AIADMK was voted back to power, the rejuvenation camp was held in Mudumalai, Nilgiris District. In 2011-12, 37 elephants attended the camp for 48 days. 35 elephants were brought for the camp the next year.

The venue was shifted to Thekkampati in 2013-14, during which 52 elephants attended. The next year, 30 elephants arrived at the camp, for 48 days.

A sum of Rs.1.04 crores was allocated for the camp. The elephants will be given rice, ragi, horsegrams, green grams, sugar cane, beaten rice turmeric, aesofedita, salt and dates. A team of doctors will be monitoring the health and prescribe medicine, in addition to Chyavanprash and other ayurvedic products.

The camp concludes on February 23.
