The Price Forecasting Scheme of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has predicted that the wholesale price of good quality carrots (those grown on the mountains) this season will be about R.35 per kilo, while those grown on the plains are likely to fetch Rs.30 per kg.
Farmers have been asked to take appropriate selling decision. The numbers were arrived at based on the wholesale prices of carrot that prevailed during the last 11 years in Mettupalayam wholesale market.
All over India, carrot is cultivated in about 0.65 lakh hectares of land, with production of 9.50 lakhs tonnes last year. Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Assam are the major cultivators. In Tamil Nadu, carrots are cultivated in the Nilgiris, Dindigul, and Krishnagiri.
The prices of beetroots are expected to be in the range of Rs.30 for hill-grown and Rs.26 per kg for those grown in plains.
Beetroot is exported to Maldives, the UAE, and Singapore.
