What do the city’s home-makers, entrepreneurs and working professionals have in common? They share a passion for good food and they also love to dine together. Bringing such food enthusiasts of the city together is Facebook group Coimbatore Food Walks that came into being some two years ago. This is a secret group on Facebook that was founded by Coimbatore based Raghunath Pillai Rajan, better known as Foodie Raghu. This group that has a member strength of 2,500 people recently celebrated its second anniversary.

“The group was started with the idea of bringing together Coimbatore-based people who cherish good food. Like the name suggests, we regularly organise food walks and this way we have covered several popular areas in our city. This group has members who are from different walks of life and food is what binds us together,” Suji R, one of the admins of Coimbatore Food Walks, says.

It was this group that explored the goodness of the idli tatta kadai that is located on Avinashi Road. About 30 members of this group relished the delicacies served at this dusty idli joint. They liked the experience of eating at this idli kadai that they revisited this place and did a repeat of the food walk. During the second visit to the idli kadai, more number of people joined in.

There is no specific schedule that this group follows, when it comes to doing food walks. However, the area to visit is decided jointly by the members of the group. The group has visited eateries along R.S. Puram, Sai Baba Colony, Race Course Road, Town Hall and Avinashi Road.

While visiting big and small restaurants and eateries, the rule is everyone can call for what they wish to eat and the bill is divided equally among the number of people who participate in the food walk. Post the food walk, the members of this group post images and their experience of the place visited. This way those who do not participate in the food walk are aware of what to try on their next visit to the eatery.

In the future, Coimbatore Food Walks has plans of organising food walks more often in Coimbatore.
