Both AIADMK and DMK confident of forming the next government

The two Dravidian parties are both confident of forming the next government after polling ended for assembly on Monday evening.

A polling percentage of 69 per cent is lower than the previous 2011 polls indicating that there is lesser anti-incumbency than was anticipated earlier. But, the insipid campaign of the AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa and the spirited campaign of DMK family – Karunanidhi, Stalin, Kanimozhi – together made the election too close to call.

Barring one, all the exit polls have given the DMK the edge, but these are dismissed by AIADMK leaders. Jayalalithaa herself said that victory was hers, “wait for two days when we will know peoples judgment.”

A senior AIADMK leader, on condition of anonymity asserted that Jayalalithaa will form the next government by winning 150 seats. All the propaganda of DMK through print and electronic media will fail to deter the voters who love Amma and are happy with everything that Amma has done for them. “Exist polls will go wrong,” was his theme song.

CR Saraswathi, AIADMK spokesperson and a candidate herself, said “it is not possible to start giving out exit polls within one hour of polling gets over. You will see, Amma will form the government,” she said.

But, this was dismissed by the DMK leaders, who are confident of dislodging the Jayalalithaa government in three days when counting is completed. “We will win 150 seats with the Congress” said a DMK leader, echoing the sentiments expressed by DMK treasurer MK Stalin.

“We are forming the next government. Barring RK Nagar, we will win every seat,” Stalin said after coming of the polling booth.

Barring one exit polls, others have given the DMK a shot a power.

Dismissing these exit polls as “inaccurate most of the times,” Tamil Maanila Congress leader GK Vasan said it is better to wait for the actual results than believe these polls. There is an upsurge for an alternative to the Dravidian parties and people have voted for our front, he said.

Polling in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry ended peacefully with Tamil Nadu registering a lower poll percentage of 69.19 as compared to the 78 per cent of previous elections but Puducherry crossed 80 per cent voting that concluded at 6 p.m.

“Till 5 p.m. around 69.19 percent of voters have exercised their franchise. Polling has come to an end in the state at 6 p.m. Those who have reached the polling stations will be allowed to vote,” Rajesh Lakhoni, chief electoral officer-Tamil Nadu told press persons.
