Putting an end to the panic among villagers, Forest Department officials today successfully tranquilised the ‘killer’ elephant and brought it under chain and rope.
The officials, including veterinarians, are taking efforts to trap the elephant, which had killed two estate workers on a single day, a couple of days ago at Mango Range near Pandalur, about 80 km from here, in the Nilgiris District.
With the help of four kumkis (tamed elephants) brought from Theppakadu elephant camp, the officials managed to surround the particular one-tusk elephant and shot a tranquiliser around 5.30 p.m. today, veterinarian Dr. Vijayaraghavan, said.
With the kumkis pushing and pulling the semi-unconscious jumbo, the department workers managed to bring it in chains and rope, curtailing its movement, he said.
It was planned to take the pachyderm to the camp, some 50 km away. It is likely to be taken to the camp around midnight.
