On Saturday, the car of R. Tamilmurugan, District Secretary of the DMDK, had a flag while entering the Collectorate. The car did not go unnoticed by one of the flying squads that was present in the area and the officials tried to remove the flag from the vehicle as it was against the Model Code of Conduct.
Even though Tamilmurugan refused initially, he had to give in and the flag was covered with a black cloth by the officials as it was not easy to remove it.
Following the event, activists and public have revealed that the commission should disclose the means and ways of filing a complaint regarding such violations.
A. Manoj, an activist from Coimbatore, questioned whether the complainant should tell the place in which the vehicle was seen or the constituency.
“Suppose I see a vehicle, should I complain by noting the vehicle number and the place? Because, the vehicle may not remain in the same area and could be a passing by vehicle,” he claimed.
Another activist also claimed that it would be better if the Commission traced the vehicle using its number and make sure that the flag was removed.
Senior politicians including Vaiko had said that the commission’s decision to remove flags from poles and cars of the party functionaries should be revised as they had been there for a long time. However, the commission refused to revoke any code.
Reacting to this, Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu Rajesh Lakhoni said that it would be sufficient if the complainant gave the name of the village in which the car was found along with the number as it would be easy to identify the constituency and alert the particular officials.
Meanwhile, Coimbatore District Administration has revealed toll free number to file complaints against the violations.
