A group of residents in Ukkadam today came on the streets to protest against the dumping of carcasses of cow and dogs in the Corporation Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).
Placing the carcass of a cow in the middle of the main road, the residents said that some people were using the STP to dispose off the dead bodies of dogs, cows and other animals, besides medical waste, near the pond at the plant.
Councilor A Saddiq, of ward No. 86, said that people of that area already faced health and hygiene related problems due to the Government dog sterilization centre and solid waste management plant, in addition to the Sewage Treatment Plant.
Some workers belonging to Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhakam and Socialist Democratic Party of India joined the protest and demanded that the culprits be brought to book.
There was already a demand for shifting the plant to the outskirts, as the residential areas surrounding it were being infested with insects and flies.
