Southern Railway today issued an ultimatum of a fortnight to around 45 families, who are residing on Railway land in Kadalaikara Street here, to vacate the premises.
Officials from Salem Railway Division, accompanied by local police and Railway police went to the area this morning and asked the residents to vacate the place encroached by them for the last 30 years.
Even as they were negotiating, local AIADMK MLA, Amman Arjun arrived and requested the officials to give more time to find alternate place. He also urged the officials to allow the residents to celebrate the Pongal festival, which is just two days away, police said.
On assurance from the MLA that he would relocate the residents within stipulated time, officials gave January 26 as deadline to vacate from the area.
The Railways had already issued notice to the residents to vacate, since it was against the rules to have any residence near 20 metres on both the sides of the track, but the issue was drawn long, as they represented the district administration to provide alternate land, before Railways took action.
