The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, in her letter to the Prime Minister, expressed concern over the centre’s lack of imitative to resolve the long-standing issue between the Indian fishermen and the Sri Lankan government, despite constant reminders from her.
Drawing attention to the fact that 83 fishing boats have been seized by the Sri Lankan navy as on March 23, Jayalalithaa, in her letter, pointed out that the Centre has not taken any constructive step to exert pressure on the Sri Lankan government to stop the arrests of Indian fishermen.
In yet another letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she requested for immediate action through the Ministry of External Affairs and the diplomatic channels to secure the release of the 99 Indian fishermen and 83 fishing boats that were seized by the Sri Lankan navy.
She also demanded that serious reconsideration be given to the Indo-Sri Lankan agreements of 1974 and 1976, keeping in mind the fact that their constitutional validity has been challenged in the Supreme Court of India.
