The protest by professors of government colleges in Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur and the Nilgris entered the second day as more than 300 teachers gathered in front of the office of the Joint Directorate of Collegiate Education to put forth their demands, here on Thursday.

It may be noted that more than 300 teachers were arrested on Wednesday for agitating in front of the JD office demanding the fixation of a proper pay scale and filling up of vacancies in government-aided colleges.

N. Pasubathy, General Secretary of the Association of University Teachers (AUT), said that 998 teachers who were due for promotion were awaiting promotion orders.

“The new pension scheme should be replaced with the old one as it is against the welfare of teachers,” he said.

He further added that the Government should also appoint Vice-Chancellors to universities, including Bharathiar and Madurai Kamaraj.

“We have been protesting for long demanding the Government to fulfill these demands, but the officials have not heeded to our pleas. We would continue to protest till our demands are met,” he added.
